Your Fellowship Questions, Answered
Before applying, review these FAQs to make sure the program aligns with your goals and availability.
The Copello Fellowship is a yearlong leadership and advocacy program that brings together 16 emerging clinician-advocates to strengthen their skills in policy engagement, media strategy, community organizing, and health equity. Fellows meet monthly, participate in expert-led trainings, engage in DFA’s Impact Areas, and complete a capstone project demonstrating their advocacy impact.
Fellows are expected to attend monthly leadership meetings (held on the second Thursday of each month), engage in their assigned Impact Area, participate in a subcommittee, and complete pre-meeting assignments. The program requires attending at least 80% of meetings, completing one legislative visit, writing at least one advocacy communication (such as a blog, op-ed, or LTE), and contributing to DFA programming, such as moderating an Advocacy Grand Rounds session.
Fellows gain hands-on training from national experts, leadership development, mentorship, and experience in legislative advocacy, communications, and organizing. Each Fellow also participates in a fully funded DC Fly-In with DFA’s FDA Task Force, collaborates with advocacy leaders, and receives support to publish or present their work. The program culminates in a capstone project and recorded presentation highlighting each Fellow’s impact.
The Fellowship is open to clinicians, residents, fellows, medical students, and other early-career health professionals who are passionate about advancing health equity and ready to take on structured advocacy responsibilities. Fellows should be committed to attending monthly meetings, participating in DFA's Impact Areas, and contributing meaningfully to policy and community engagement throughout the fellowship year.
Applications for the Copello Health Advocacy Fellowship typically open in May and close in mid-June. Selected Fellows are notified in late summer, and the fellowship year begins in the fall. Exact dates are announced on the DFA website and through email updates, so we encourage interested applicants to sign up for notifications.
