Doctors for America’s FDA Task Force Sends Letters Urging Policymakers and Regulators to Trust Science on Abortion Medications

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Doctors for America’s (DFA) U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Task Force sent letters to both FDA and members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) committee, expressing our deep concerns about potential political motivation and influence on the ongoing safety review for the abortion medication, mifepristone.     

For more than two decades, mifepristone has been extensively studied and monitored. FDA scientists have repeatedly reviewed its safety using clinical trials, post-market surveillance, adverse event reporting, and other monitoring systems. Those reviews have consistently supported the drug's safety and effectiveness.

Doctors for America’s FDA Task Force is deeply concerned that recently initiated FDA review of the safety of mifepristone was not undertaken because of new revelations about adverse events or new insights about long term effects, but rather as an appeal to a political base. 

In response, DFA’s FDA Task Force sent a letter to members of the Senate HELP Committee, outlining the results of the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) analysis of mifepristone, as well as a letter the FDA urging the agency to ensure that this review follows its long-standing scientific standards and remains free from political or ideological influence.

As physicians who bear the ultimate responsibility for the lives of our patients, we have an obligation to understand the treatments we prescribe. We have independently reviewed all of the studies that have been performed on mifepristone, and have come to the inescapable conclusion that the safety and efficacy data meet the highest standards.

“The bedrock of trust in the system is a belief that decisions made by the health agencies, including the FDA, are based on a fair and accurate evaluation of the data, without the imposition of ideological or political influence. Because the data aligns with our clinical experience we have the highest confidence in the use of mifepristone for all of its medical indications including therapeutic abortions,” said Dr. Jan Krommes FDA Task Force Chair.
