Doctors for America’s FDA Task Force Concerned by FDA Approval of Flavored Vapes
Washington, D.C. - Doctors for America’s (DFA) U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Task Force is deeply concerned about FDA’s recent decision to authorize the use of fruit-flavored vapes, a decision which was seemingly made after significant political pressure.
As physicians, we’ve witnessed first hand the devastating impact tobacco and nicotine-related illnesses and deaths have on families and communities. And while use of vapes may allow some tobacco smokers to quit smoking, it is not the only method, and is less effective when used alone. Fruit flavored vaping products are particularly appealing and may result in being a first choice use by legitimate users (adults). Children are known to be especially drawn to fruit flavors, and age-gated use has not yet been proven in real world settings to be effective. Vaping exposes the lungs to risks similar to cigarette smoking, with a disproportionate impact on young lungs. We are concerned that FDA scientists were not afforded the opportunity to fully consider their approval, or how they compare to products currently on the market, during a time when schools, parents, and physicians are trying to address increased teen nicotine usage. Â
This week’s announcement that FDA will reverse course and allow the sale of fruit-flavored vapes is another alarming example of political pressure influencing the regulatory process.Â
It is crucial that the FDA remain an independent agency allowed to make science-based decisions free from financial or political pressures.Â
