Doctors for America’s FDA Task Force Statement on the Nomination of Dr. Heidi Overton

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Doctors for America’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Task Force has serious concerns regarding the nomination of Dr. Heidi Overton to serve as Commissioner of the FDA.

While Dr. Overton is a physician with training in public health and clinical investigation and has experience in federal health policy, her record raises significant questions about whether she is prepared to provide the independent, evidence-driven leadership the FDA urgently needs.

Of particular concern is Dr. Overton’s involvement in recent efforts to alter federal childhood vaccine policy. These actions raise questions about the scientific standards she would apply as Commissioner and her willingness to defend established scientific and regulatory processes when they conflict with political priorities. The FDA Commissioner must do more than advise caution. The Commissioner must be willing to unequivocally defend the agency’s scientific independence and the integrity of its career experts.

We also have concerns about whether Dr. Overton’s management experience has adequately prepared her to lead an agency of FDA’s size, complexity, and importance. Following significant workforce disruption and declining morale, FDA needs a Commissioner capable of restoring stability, supporting its career workforce, and rebuilding confidence in the agency and its decisions.

As physicians, we rely on the FDA to make rigorous, transparent, and evidence-based decisions about the medicines, vaccines, and medical products we recommend to our patients. Doctors for America’s FDA Task Force has consistently advocated for a fully staffed, adequately funded, and scientifically independent FDA capable of maintaining its status as the world’s “gold standard” for medical product regulation.

We urge members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee to closely scrutinize Dr. Overton’s record and seek clear commitments regarding scientific independence, transparency, workforce stability, and the integrity of FDA’s regulatory processes.

The next FDA Commissioner must demonstrate not simply the credentials to lead the agency, but the independence and judgment to put patients, public health, and science ahead of political priorities.
