May 18th San Diego Shooting

Washington, D.C. - Doctors for America (DFA) is deeply saddened by the recent shooting in San Diego. This is yet another devastating reminder that gun violence remains a public health crisis affecting all communities across our country.   

The firearms used in the shootings were accessed from one of the parent’s homes. Safe firearm storage saves lives. Securely storing firearms unloaded, locked, and separate from ammunition is one of the most effective ways to prevent unintentional shootings, youth suicide, and acts of violence involving children and teens. 

We support policies that hold adults accountable when children can access unsecured firearms and cause harm. Responsible gun ownership includes responsible storage. 

As physicians, we see firsthand the lifelong trauma these tragedies inflict on patients, families, first responders, healthcare workers, and entire communities.  Everyone deserves to feel safe in their schools, places of worship, movie theaters, neighborhoods, grocery stores, parks, and other public places. 

With June being Gun Violence Prevention Awareness Month, we urge lawmakers and communities to prioritize evidence-based solutions and prevent further loss of life. We must continue advancing public health policies that reduce access to unsecured firearms and help prevent future tragedies.
